Can I post cover song?

Cover songs are a complicated issue. The general rule of thumb is you need permission from whoever has the rights – usually with published artists, this will be from the record’s publisher. The rule is the same for YouTube, SoundCloud and other services.

Getting the permissions is tricky and can be expensive. Ideally you can get in contact with the rights holder and just credit them in the description but this is very unlikely to be covered by copyright law – it's entirely up to you whether you would want to take that risk. Also, Twine will remove anything that we are asked to remove for copyright infringement or proactively if we know it does not have the rights. See here for more about our copyright policy.

Alternatively, you need an agreement. Often, you probably don't have a contact in a record label or with an A-list celebrity to get permissions but there are other ways:

With these services, you’ll need to pay mechanical royalties on a per play basis. This will be your responsibility as Twine does not have a mechanism to do this.

We're aware that's a bit of a vague answer, unfortunately. Laws do tend to vary from country to country so please don't base this information as fact.
